The contribution to the topics agreed

In the recent years, among others the energy efficiency and environment friendly wood based
materials were in the focus of research projects of the Innovation Centre of University of West
Hungary. According to this ambition specific measuring instruments were constructed. From our
aspect there are four research streams visible in the work package “Material and technological
properties of relevant wood based material”.

    a) Utilization of broadleaf wood species in wood residential homes.
Wood species like poplar, black locust and beech (or other species) would be appropriate for
producing wood building elements. This statement needs a research verification and probably
certificate. Methods of utilization should be elaborated.
    b) Application of surfaces with low emission property in the wall construction.
This part of the project could contribute the improvement of the insulation capacity in a great extent. It
is possible to apply and develop the results of Mirrorpanel* further. The physical principle works
similarly in one layer, e.g. by building a foil with low emission surface property in the wall structure
the heat transfer across the wall can be decreased significantly.
    * As a comment we note, the Mirrorpanel is a result of our previous research. It uses paper as heat
reflecting foil, what is also a renewable and nature close material.
    c) Natural based materials used as insulation materials, like wood bark.
The usage of renewable and reusable material is more and more important aim from the aspect of
environment protection. The materials to be found in the nature can be used effectively by high
technology. The research aims to attain this high technology. Model experiment proved that wood
bark of different species has different heat insulation capacity. There are common species bark of
which has very good thermal properties when processed by a special method.
    d) Developing new structures of wooden houses
Up till now a number of structures were developed and used in wood architecture from the log houses
till wooden frame houses. Requirements are continuously changing, new challenges arose in the recent
years: decreasing CO2 emission, keeping carbon in the wood became a new requirement, besides
chemicals should be eliminated as much as possible. Due to these requirements structures containing
more solid wood (e.g. Cross Laminated Timber) became competitive with the most general timber
frame-MDF-insulation-gypsum board structures. Development of house structures based on chemical
free solid wood structures is the main subject of the proposed research.

In case the work packages will be distributed among the four universities, we should gladly undertake
a work package leader position of this package (Material and technological properties of relevant
    wood based material.)

Environmental and ecological impact of green houses

Wood as building material has several advantages as compared to other materials, such as brick,
concrete and metal. It is a low cost, environment friendly material, which operates with a high
efficiency (e.g. has a high thermal resistance). There are studies proving that wood based buildings
emitted less carbon dioxide during manufacturing and also during their lifetime, than concrete or brick
buildings. We are prepared to work out calculation methods to estimate the carbon balance of wood
buildings (wood products) in contrast to brick buildings.

Comparison and harmonization of relevant standards:

In the third topic it seems to be clear, that standards and prescriptions have to be collected from each
country by each partner. One partner could make the comparison after working out the comparison method.
The other university partners could consult and prepare the harmonization proposal.

    Marketing aspects of green houses:

A research part of the marketing aspects should deal with the following subjects:
    a) what are the main advantages of a wooden house from marketing aspect
    b) which are the market segments, where green (wooden) houses have most advantages as
    c) compared to other houses
    d) what are the conditions (requirements) a green (wooden) house should meet to be the most
    e) competitive in the certain segment
    f) which are the barriers to use more green (wooden) houses
    g) economical effects of enlarged production of wooden houses
    h) what are the arguments to communicate to the society
    i) how to convey our messages to the society

    And a special question is:
How to use our four countries’ cooperation? (are there any advantages/possibilities in the following
fields: mutual communication to public, co-operation in development, technology transfer, etc)
Communication part of the marketing aspects: Dissemination of project’s results is a main part of
every EU project. In this certain case it is very useful to combine the dissemination tasks with marketing effects.
Main groups of information to be disseminated are as follows (the same are also marketing
    arguments):
    a) new technical solutions
    b) ecological aspects
    c) economical aspects
    d) EU (four countries) cooperation
These information (containing marketing messages) should be communicated in the project period
continuously and after the project duration as well.
Channels of communication are to be elaborated later, there are just a few hints as follows:
    a) dynamic project web site in four + English languages
    b) brochures with same design, same content, but different languages to each countries
    c) conferences in each countries (for experts)
    d) conferences/shows for public in each countries
